GM-GMC: speedo, speedometer cable, speedo gear

i used to know this, but i guess the ex took my memory too. i have an 88 g20 and the speedo gear is broken.  i took the retaining clip off but i cant get the housing off.  thank you

I am not sure that I understand your question.

If you are referring to removal of the speedometer cable assembly at the transmission, removal of the housing "Y" or fork should permit removal of the housing from the transmission tailshaft extension cover.  Wiggling or prying may be necessary to get the housing to come out.

If I misunderstood the question, please re-state it.
