GM-GMC: windshield wiper switch wiring 78 suburban, windshield wiper switch, haynes manual

i have had a problem with the wiper switch for a while now, it is a new vehicle to me.  when i push it in to spray the fluid it just keeps spraying whenever i turn on the wipers until it empties the tank.  i took the switch itself apart and cleaned all the terminals, i noticed there was another metal box with a circuitboard in it which i cleaned the terminals on as well.  now i can turn it on or off but have no spray and no intermittent capabilities.  i dont know if the problem is in the switch, the box or the actual wiper moter and fluid pump?  where can i get info on this?  i was following as best i could the info in the haynes manual which shows a different wiring scheme to the one that exists.
