GM-GMC: starter trouble, flywheel teeth, chevy s10

Question
I have been having starter trouble with my 2.2 liter chevy s10, year 2000.  I have changed the starter three times because after only minimal use it does not want to disengage, and sometimes trys to start the truck when it is already started.  I have taken it to mechanics and have tried to fix it myself and it has not worked.  If you have any clues as to what it may be, I would be more than grateful for your opinion.  Thank You.

Answer
Usually GM starters have small flat meatl SHIMS placed between the starter and the mounting flange on the engine.

If these SHIMS are NOT replaced correctly the starter bendix can either be engaged to DEEP into the teeth on the flywheel or NOT deep enough thus causing the teeth to be worn on the flywheel.

It is also recommended that you spray the bendix shaft with a suitable lubricant to prevent it from STICKING on the shaft thus not allowing it to retract back into the strater housing all the way.

1. Check all, NOT some, ALL the flywheel teeth. Most auto repair centers will not take the extra time to check them.

2. Check for proper teeth engagement via the SHIMS.

3. lubricate the bendix shaft.

let me know.
