AnswerHi Chuck - when you say that it only happens with the cold, makes one think it is the A/C condensor.
One of two things. Try a can of Lysol, or some other spray disinfectant, and spray it into the the grille below the windshield. This will force it into the A/C system, and kill the odour causing mildew, which is probably the culprit.
EitheOr, you could have a physical buildup of debris, and or water. Make sure the water drain plug for your heater/AC system is not plugged up and causing water to sit, and cause odors. Then either, you or your mechanic, remove the fan motor under the hood, and then you have to clean out the condensor behind. We always use a can of something like BrakeCleens, which dissolves the dirt and it empties as a liquid, but then with the windows open, run your heater/AC system full blast to get the smell from the chemical out of your truck.
Hope these hints help, and you should be up here - you wouldn't need to worry about your smell, -30 F!
