Honda: 96 Odyssey Automatic transmission, Odyssey, Honda

Question
The check engine lite is on and the D4 shift indicator lite blinks. A read of the code says shift solenoid or bad electrical connection. The transmission stays in 4th gear when the shift selector is in the D4 position, unless you move the shift selector to 1 to start going. Does this sound like a shift solenoid? If so there seems to be an upper and a lower solenoid, which one is the problem?

Answer
If you have a transmission code stored follow the troubleshooting flow chart for that code. You'll need a DVOM , a service manual or AllData, and a decent understanding of the transmission's operation under normal conditions to diagnose this failure.
