How do I clear the engine codes on a 2000 Honda Civic EX 5 speed?

Jenny, There are a few methods for clearing the codes from your car's ECU (engine control unit)since it is a 5 speed model.
The first method for clearing engine codes is with a scanner using OBDII generic software. Simply locate the 16 pin data link connector near the hood release handle on your car. The scanner can be prompted to clear stored codes with communication through this connector. Several of my customers tell me Autozone parts stores will read or clear codes at no charge.
Another way to clear the memory on your car's ECU is by disconnecting the car battery. Leave the negative side battery cable disconnected for several minutes then reconnect the terminal. This will clear the codes but it will also clear the car's "idle-learn". To re-learn the idle just start the car and allow it to idle with no loads (a/c off, radio off) until the radiator fans cycle two times. It has been my experience that the 5 speeds idle learn procedure can take as long as 15 to 20 minutes.
