Mazda: 1983 RX 7 problem, madza rx7, autolite plugs

Question
1983 Madza RX7,  Hi Chris,  Does a 83 rotary engine have fuel filters and if so where are they.  My car has started then quit, started then quit and then kept running.  The other day it just stopped while driving down the Tamiami Trail.  It has run ever since.  I don't think it's electric but would sure like your opinion. The Madza people say they can't repair a car that still runs but driving it scares the hell otta me.  Can you tell me where to start checking?  I bought this car as a retirement present to myself.  I plan on keeping it till the day I die. I'm a expert over on the plumbing page so I'll be looking for your answer.  Thanks.  Tom aka speedball1

Answer
yes, there is a fuel filter.  It is on the drivers side of the car near the front of the gas tank behind the rear diff.  There are actually quite a few things that certain problem can be.  I'll give you a list here, so you can start checking them all out.

1.  Are you running 92 octane?  (you should be)

2.  check fuel filter, see if pump is pumping.  It will actually run without the pump, but it can die like you are saying.

3.  Distributor cap, rotor wires, spark plugs.  Check the cap and rotor... if there is a lot of pitting on the contacts inside the cap, and the rotor has a lot of residue on it, replace them.  (If you replace the rotor, it's likely that the wires need to be replaced as well.)  Spark plugs DO NOT USE AUTOLITE PLUGS.  USE NGK ONLY.  If you take a look at autolites, there is only one prong, where as the stock plugs (NGK) have 4!!  It makes a huge difference.
