Mazda: noises, mazda dealer, mazda 626

Question
why would the "lifters" rattle?  Also,
when I turn the steering wheel. I hear a crunch/knocking sound  I get the impression it linked to the steering. it sounds like it's coming from the steering column area.  the car is a 96 mazda 626  approx 75k

Answer
Dear Barbara,
Thank you for your question.
Lifters often rattle, especially if they are old or if the oil has not been changed as often as it should have been.
It is possible to purchase quick-fix type potions such as
"Lifter-Free" but be warned thay will not last long before the noise comes back. They are worn out. However, the correct name for the lifters are Hydraulic-Lash Adjusters and in UK money there are about £30.00 each. - Quite expensive if you need 16 of them!
All lifters make some noise. In cold temperatures they are worse. Overall there should not be a major effect on the vehicle's running, just because of noise.
My advice is let a Mazda dealer listen to them!
Now on the steering noise - Is this noise there all the time?, when you are moving? - or just stationary?
The column sometimes has noises - some of which can be dealt with with a simple shot of a lubricant like WD40.
If the noise is when you are moving and sounds like the steering rack or driveshafts - do not delay. Get to a dealer or repair specialist - it could be dangerous!!!!
Your sincerely
