Mercedes: 560SL Windshild Wipers, salvage yard, windshild

I have a 1987 560SL.  The windshield wipers stopped working.  The motor works, and you can see the wiper arm move about 1/4 inch every few seconds, but they will not sweep.  I have tried to access the motor/linkage from inside the hood but I cant get to it.  My mechanic says you have to take out the dashboard to get to it, for about $2000.  I'm looking for help to repair it myself but cant find good instructions.  I've tried AllData and some other sites with no luck. Has anyone seen this problem and know how to repair it?

I would suggest that your sign up on benzworld.com. There many people who will provide help in the docs. you need to remove the dash. Once you get to the wiper mechanism, you should be able to locate a used unit on ebay, or at a salvage yard. $2,000 seems quite high for this process, unless that is a dealer quote.
I had a fellow send me all the manuals for the 420 sel. I used the information to take out the instrument panel and drop the steering column to install the ignition switch.
