Mercedes: heat gauge, radiator core, mercedes 200e

Question
QUESTION: My car is 1994 mercedes 200e and sometime the heat gauge goes right to the
top and come down but I am not loosing water. Please help

ANSWER: Hello Thumba
There are a couple of possiilities.
When you have these heat rise indications at the gauges, what is going on with your engine. Are you in traffic? Are you at idle? Are you on the road?
How quickly does the needle rise and return to normal after startup?
When it happens raise the hood and check to see if the radiator is excessively hot. If not, then you have a bad sensor or gauge.

You may have a defective thermostat. When was the last time that your radiator was drained and chemically cleaned?
The thermostat may be sticking. It has a spring loaded disk that changes length with temperature. With age, the thermostat will sometimes stick causing a dead water area in the block. You will see a rapid rise in temperature then the unit will pop open allowing water to circulate properly.
If you have an electric fan, you may have a bad temperature switch. If the fan is not exercising to keep the air flow over the radiator then you can see fluctuations in the temperature.

Finally, you may have a bad heat gauge sensor.

QUESTION: Hi Robert
Thanks for your respond. The heat gauges rise in traffic but sometimes only. I travel -+ 200 km daily return and sometimes
it goes up in traffic.

Answer
You may have a thermostat sticking on the in the engine block, or a bad heat sensor on the fan. You may want to have the water system professionally flushed using a pulsating washout with chemicals. If the radiator flutes get sludge build up that will cause the water to rise rapidly when there is little flow of water and less air in traffic. Can your hear the electric fans running when you see the heat rise. The electric fan should be going full force if you  have two fans, they both should be going full speed to help remove the heat from the radiator core.
Let me know..
