Hello Des,
Sounds like an injector is sticking. Get some bio-diesel fuel ( bio-diesel is low in sulfur and is an excellent tank cleaner... or injector cleaner made for diesel and add to the tank.
When the injector stay open too long, it will cause too much fuel to be added to the air and thus the black smoke.
