Mercedes: problem with shifting in 190E 1990, sliping, transmission specialist

Question
QUESTION: i am afraid my Mercedes is not shifting to the last gear. It got
2-3-D shifting box, but as I noticed that only 2 of the gears are
shifting, and there is no 4th even though i checked in the manual
- it says that it is suppose to be 4 of all of them. I thought
that it could be the overdrive, but i also found out that this
car doesn't have the overdrive, what do you know about it, does
it have it? thank you so much, and let me know. I don't wanna
burn the engine driving w/o the last gear, because the RPM is
very high.

ANSWER: Hikolae,
Regardless of the number of speeds, you should have the transmission checked by a transmission specialist.
I expect that you have lost the top gear and if the vehicle is not shifting from second to high, you could possibly cause engine damage trying to drive the car at road speed.
What are the positions indicated on the shift leaver?
1,2,3,D.  ?
If so, you should be able to manually shift through the gears.
Have you checked the fluid level. The automatic fluid should show normal level. Not too low and not over full.
Good Luck

QUESTION: Thank you so much for that quick answer! the fluid level is ok. and the shift leaver says 2-3-D-N-R-P. When I drive it shifts really softly from the 1st to 2nd and ends with the 3rd, the same with the downshift. Could it be some kind of sensor that keeps 4th gear from shifting into?

Answer
Hikolae,

Soft shifting is usually and indication that the bands are slipping. The need adjusting at the very least. I would take the vehicle to a transmission shop and have the tech test drive it. The fourth bands may be gone, or the servo that locks the bands in place may be gone.
I expect that this vehicle is a three speed with no over drive. If the third bands are sliping, that could be causing your engine to have to rev higher than normal to keep the vehicle up to speed.
It is time to take the vehicle to an independent transmission shop that know about mercedes vehicles.
