Mercedes: fuel pump for 1987 Mercedes 190E, fuel injection cleaner, fuel flow

Question
We have power to the fuel pump, but no fuel is being pumped.  Car has sat for 3 years and was running when parked.  We are thinking of taking the pump off and soaking it in something to remove old gas.  Any suggestions of what to soak it in or other possiblties?  We don't want to invest in another pump at this time if possible.

Answer
At what location are your checking for fuel flow? Directly out of the pump, or at the engine compartment?
Have you located and replaced all the fuel filters?
The fuel tank should be drained and new fuel installed along with fuel injection cleaner.
Today's fuel is quite prone to break down in storage. Gum and varnish result. When new fuel is inserted in the tank, these contaminates are broken loose and end up in the fuel strainer or injectors at the engine.
If this pump is in the fuel tank, it is  very important to NOT operate it unless it is covered with fuel, as overheating can result.
Good Luck
