Mercedes: 1975 mercedes 240d, number search results, side ports

Question
I have a mercedes 240d and I want want to know why it started overheating.  My mechanic said that there wasnt enough oil, so that's why it overheated.  But I think that there was a fan failure of some sort.  I heard a clicking noise, then part of my fan shroud broke, then the car turned off.  Do you think that it overheated because of the lack of oil, or did something happen to the fan?  i need to know, because my dad thinks i was ignorant in not checking the oil often enough.  Are these cars notorious for leaking or burning oil?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks.

Answer
You may have other problems.
The fan blade, as I recall is bolted direct to the water pump on your car.
The fan shroud would need to jam the blade at engine start, and the only way I can think for that to happen is if your belt was very loose.

Air trapping in engine block can occure if the water bypass pipe is plugged with corrosion, which is very common, and will cause overheating.

Suggest you replace the following parts:
#1. Water Bypass Pipe.
#2. Thermostat.
#3. Radiator cap.
#4. Engine oil and filter.

Be sure to clean out the hollow center and side ports of banjo bolts that mount the water bypass pipe to engine block.

After you replace the suggested parts, monitor oil use very close.

The son of a friend had this happen last year, due to adding too much oil.
