Mercedes: Need purchasing tips for 300d, steam locomotive, leak oil

Question
Lance,
I have decided that I want a "cool car" and have been looking for a Mecedes 300D, preferably an early 80's model with the 123 chassis and round head lights.
Are there any warning signs I should look for that might indicate the vehicle is a heap?
Are there specific things that should have been replaced by now, the timing chain for example?
Any guidance would be appreciated!
Elizabeth

Answer
I had one of those. Good car with bad gadgets. The ACC (autamatic climate control). Run it through the range of temps, make sure the heater heats, and the air cools. will likely not work. Not cheap to fix.

BIG ONE: Make SURE the automatic transmission shifts the same when cold as when warm, then hot. If it does not, walk away.
If the power windows are not working right, sometimes the switches just need cleaning.

Run the engine hot, park it, idling, remove the oil fill cap.If it puffs blow-by vapor up to the grille with the hood open like a steam locomotive, the engine will consume and leak oil.

If it's cold where you are, start it stone cold in the morning. If it does not kick right over, it's worn, lacks sufficient compression. Make seller let you have it compression tested at the DEALER, to get the real scoop. Low compression, run, don't walk away.
If it's an '85 with a trap oxidizer, ask if it's been replaced.
If you buy it, I'll turn you on to advice till it comes out your ears, and parts discounts, too. They ride and handle great.
