-----Question-----
I am trying to repair a CEL on my 95 eclipse. The code is 36(pulsed secondary air injection). This was supposed to have been recalled for the 95 eclipse with a manual trans and removed from the 96 and newer models with the non turbo engine. Some how i got one that still has this code in the computer and I need to know how to repair this or to clear it so this code doesn't come back. Can you please help me with this?
-----Answer-----
Hi James,

Here is the pertinent info on that TSB. Though it is not a recall.

NO.: TSB-96-17-002

DATE: July, 1996

MODEL: 1995 Eclipse

SUBJECT:
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE 51

PURPOSE
Improper operation of the secondary air injection solenoid may cause Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 51 to set in the ECM. If DTC 51 is read with the scan tool, the secondary air injection solenoid and possibly its wiring harness and connector may have corrosion contamination. Perform the following diagnosis procedures:

- Check the operation of the secondary air injection solenoid as described in this bulletin. Install a new, improved secondary air injection solenoid if necessary.

- Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring harness for corrosion. If necessary, repair the connector and/or harness using a newly available repair kit listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
1995 Eclipse non turbo charged models produced before 6/1/95

Seems there is a bad connect problem with many of these. I would check this first. Clean and reconnect the pigtail.

As for the code 36, it is the same thing. Shows to be an open circuit to the secondary air injection solenoid. Check your connections. I think your find the problem there.

Answer
Hi James,

Located on the throttle body. I have a horrible pic of this stuff in two parts. I will need your e-mail to send it to you. This part can only be purchased at the dealer. Part number
NO.: EMR-99-001
DATE: December, 1998
MODEL: 1995 Eclipse 2.0L Non-Turbo M/T

More stuff on this:

PURPOSE
Only manual transaxle vehicles have the pulsed secondary air injection system. The system injects fresh air upstream of the catalytic convertor. It operates for a short period after cold engine start-up until the engine coolant temperature reaches approximately 52°C (125°F).

The secondary air injection system contains:

Pulsed secondary air injection valve
Pulsed secondary air injection solenoid
Connecting hoses and tubes
OPERATION
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the ground path for the pulsed secondary air injection solenoid. When the PCM grounds the solenoid, fresh air from the air cleaner flows through the pulsed secondary air injection valve to the catalytic converter.
The valve prevents exhaust gases from flowing into to the fresh air stream at the air cleaner when the solenoid is grounded. If the valve malfunctions, a popping noise can be heard during cold start throttle stabs.

Recall?

SUBJECT:
ASPIRATOR SYSTEM REMOVAL AND FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR INSPECTION OR REPLACEMENT - EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) is recalling all 1995 Eclipse vehicles equipped with the 2.0L non-turbo (420A) engine and manual transmission for an emissions related condition.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Description of Condition
The NOx emission level on these vehicles may not comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or California Air Resources Board (CARB) emission regulations. Additionally, the fuel pressure regulator on some of these vehicles may fail.

Remedy
This Emissions Recall Campaign includes the following procedures:

^ Inspection, and replacement of the fuel pressure regulator if required.
^ Removal of the exhaust aspirator system (secondary air injection system)
^ Reprogramming (or replacement, if necessary) of the powertrain control module (PCM)*
NOTE :A PCM reprogramming cartridge (MIT992016) will be sent to each dealership for use in completing this Emissions Recall Campaign.

Repair kits for removing the aspirator system (P/N 05013898AA), fuel pressure regulators (P/N M04883076), and PCMs (if required) are available to perform the necessary modifications to the affected vehicles. Refer to the Parts Information section of this bulletin.

*NOTE :Some early vehicles were built with a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that cannot be reprogrammed and must be replaced. If the PCM requires replacement, as determined by the service procedure, refer to the Parts Information chart to determine the appropriate replacement PCM part number.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
1995 Eclipse 2.0L Non-Turbo (420A Engine), Manual Transmission

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

A letter will be sent by first class mail to all registered owners of affected vehicles. The letter instructs them to return their vehicle to their Mitsubishi dealer so the dealer can perform this campaign procedure at no charge. A copy of this customer letter is shown with this bulletin.

Hope this helps!
