Trust me, I wish I had the money to do a new fuel pump as well, but thats another $250... Yes, when it died before it still had lights and crank just wouldnt start up for a min. or two.

Now however, the thing doesnt have spark (again) and the dist. is new and the ign. relay seems good. I think Im going to have to buy a real "new/rebuilt" comp. instead of my bone yard approach- ARGH! Well, I did find one to order off Ebay thats factory rebuilt, tested and has a 1 year warrenty. Not bad for $100.

It started and ran, just died every now and again. Then when I dropped the gas tank, inspected it and put it back in-no spark...

Hello again Dinger,
Well,
I replaced the computer again- another from the bone yard with correct numbers. This time it died again but the speedo remained working. I pulled the fuel tan (thinking maybe we just got bad gas or there was contaminations in the tank). Tank was nice and clean, so the fuel got drained and replaced with a few gallons of gas from a different station. For a little while the gas wasnt getting to the rail, then when it did, I had no freakin spark again. I pulled the computer again and no leaks on the board. But still no spark.

Is there a special procedure to pulling the gas tank that my manual didnt inform me about that could cause no spak again or is it the computer again? New plugs, plug wires, dist., dist. cap & rotor, fuel & air filter, and 3rd comp (from junk yard) later and I still have a broken ride...This sucks! I know that I should just buy a rebuilt comp. but at $320 in my area, thats expensive and I now have to sell my motorcycle just to fund this damn car. But hopefully with your help I can save this car yet...

I appreciate all you have helped me with,
Cain

Question -
Hello,
I recieved a 91 mitsubishi eclipse 1.8L automatic from a friend after it broke down. It had no spark at all. He had the alternator and dist. replaced and it still had no spark. I found the ECU was bad from a compacitor leak out, and replaced it- comp #159561. After which it fired right up and ran great. Until today (day after comp replacment) when my wife tried to drive it over approx. 40 miles. It died out a few times on her. I replaced the plugs, plug wires, dist. cap & rotor, air & fuel filters. We then took the same drive to test it. Same thing, just died- it lunged as if the key were turned off and the tach and speedo went to 0, throttle non-responsive, after coasting to a stop is when it just died,no check engine light. I consulted my repair manual, tested all the sensors and they seemed to check out. I also took the case off the new ECU to make sure no compaciters were leaking on it and nothing...

Can you please tell me any coarse of action I havent taken or something I overlooked?

Thank you for your time,
Cain

Hi Cain, I read both you sent. I am going to just answer this one. It sounds to me like a bad computer! Where did the other one come from you put in? Remember on those, the numbers have to be an exact match. There is no mixing years or substituting different numbers for the same year. The clue here is that you mention the tech AND speedo zero out when it dies. The speedo should still be reading the right speed even with a dead stick. This signal is sent through the transmission to the computer and that signal is always live. Try a different PCM and see what happens. If you don't have the original number off the old one the parts department at the Nissan store will get it for you using the VIN. Used should be ok, but then sometimes...

Yo Cain,

Your not making this easy... LOL
Geeezzz I wish I had know you were going to remove the fuel tank! I would have had you drop a pump in while you were there. This could also be a bad pick-up in the distributor. Ignition relay also. Do you have lights when it dies? Does it crank but not turn over? I mean, while your coasting on a dead stick, will it crank but not start? Crank is starter working, turn over is actually starting.

Hey Cain,

Try a pick-up on the distributer before ordering the computer... Let me know how that went.

Answer
Yes Cain,

It's built into the distributor. I can only make suggestions, we have no code information and have not monitored a data stream. Have you replaced the MAF sensor assembly yet? It has the air temp sensor, barometric pressure sensor and the mass air flow sensor. Did you try the IAC sensor yet? or the MAP sensor? I mean there are dozens of sensors here. Without the scan, what do we do? In older cars, before electronic sensors, we could play with air/fuel mixtures, coils, plug, wires, etc... But on these newer ones you need a scan tool to get a direction in which way to go. Most modern shops have these and Cottman Transmission will diagnose this problem for free.
