Oldsmobile/Buick: Olds A/C question, olds cutlass, compressor belt

Question
Hello Ed

We have a 1994 Olds Cutlass with the 3.1 and auto trans.(120,000 miles).  The compressor is making a loud noise and I took it to the shop where the recommended a compressor/entire system replacement.  My question is:  Will this vehicle be able to make a move from central Illinois to south florida?  Are there any other options lke replacing bearingsor bypassing the A/c with a different belt or anything?!  Your advice would be much appreciated.  Also could the pull on the engine from this problem be causing jerking at low rpm overdrive speeds?

Thanks,
Brad

Answer
Brad ,

Was the compressor still working when you brought the vehicle to the mechanic ? I have had literally dozens of cars that made compressor noises when the clutch kicks it on , the sound doesn't necessarily mean the whole compressor needs to be replaced .

Most newer cars have one giant serpentine belt that wraps/ twists around all your pulleys including the AC compressor . Older Cars have separate belts , meaning the AC compressor belt can be taken off and it would not hinder the car from running . Newer cars are completely opposite . Without me looking into your engine compartment theres know way for me to tell .

Brad if you have any more questions please feel free to ask . Don't forget to rate my response to you .

Cheers,

Ed McKenna
