Pontiac: Ran out of Gas, fuel filter, fuel pump

Question
Even if I put gas in it right away and didn't try to keep starting it?  When I ran out, it coasted to the pumps...

Thank you for the prompt reply to the first question!

I ran out of gas yesterday just about a block from the gas station.  Lucky me, I coasted right to the pumps.  Since I've filled up, my car will not stay running unless I keep the accelerator pushed down.  My question is this:
Could the fuel filter be clogged from debris that was at the bottom of the tank since I let it get so low?  Or is there another problem?

Thank you in advance.

Chances are, you damaged the fuel pump by running it out of gas. The pump uses the gas as a lubricant and a coolant.

Answer
The damage was being done before you ran out of gas. When the tank gets that low, the little bit of gas that is in the tank will slosh around and the pump will suck air. Every time that it sucks air the pump is being damaged.
You should probably take it to the shop to have it diagnosed. I didn't say that it was the pump, just that it could be the pump.
