Pontiac: Car stalls when I put my foot on the gas at first., fuel ratios, foot on the gas

Question
My `96 Pontiac Grand Am stalls when I put my foot on the gas.  It usually happens when I first start up the car and I am driving along.  If I go more than 20 miles an hour it stalls at first before it gets going.  Some times I have to lift my foot up off the gas pedle and put my foot down again to get it to go.  When it does start to go after it stalls it goes really fast and I have to put my foot on the break to slow down. This is especially the case when I am in stop and go traffic.  Once the car has been driven for a while it seems to be ok and dosn`t seem to have that problem anymore.
Do you know what might be causing this?

Answer
Is the computer lighting up the Service Engine soon light.  It sounds like the air/fuel ratios are all messed up.  Since this car is fuel injection, it could be computer, or one thing that comes to mind is the fuel pump.

The computer would not indicate a problem with the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light if the fuel pump was going bad, because it does not monitor pressure.
See if you can get a mechanic to check the fuel pressure, and if it fluctuates a lot then you need a new pump, not cheap unfortunately.

Try haveing the pump checked first and if it's not that it's going to take more investigation, also unfortunately costly unless you know how to do it yourself.
