Pontiac: Pulley, pulley bolt, tensioner pulley

Question
HI, I have a 1989 pontiac Grand am with a quad4 2.3L engine, and the problem I`m having is the A/C compresser locking up. I need to change the tensioner pulley, so I can route the drive belt off the A/C compresser until I can get another compresser. What I need help on is what direction must the tensioner pulley bolt be turned to loosen the pulley.
Thank You.
Mike.

Answer
In most cases just by looking at the pulley you can guess which way to turn it.  Just try both ways, it'll budge once you turn it the right way... it won't do any harm to turn it the wrong way, it would just be like trying to increase the tension... no big deal.
I assume since you say "pulley bolt" that you are supposed to turn the bolt right on the pulley, because in some cases there is a half inch square hole and you need to use a half inch ratchet to pull the pulley mechanism.  Either way just try and move it in the direction that would seem to loosen it.

After reading your predicament again... I assume you are just trying to take the belt off, at least that's what it sounds like.

Or did you want to remove the PULLEY itself from the mechanism.
If that is the case you will probably have to change the whole PULLEY/tensinoer spring mechanism.  But since you say you have problems with the compressor I guess my previous assumption was correct.
Hope this helps
