Saab: Saab transmission problem, saab 93 aero, transmission oil cooler

Question
Hi i was wondering if you could help me recently i was driving my car a 1999 saab 93 aero with the turbo and i came to a stop. I then pulled away and started driving up the street i got to about 25 - 30 mph and all of a sudden my rpms shot up. the engion didnt stop running but it was as if i was in neutral and i didnt go anywhere. I shut off my car and got out  and there was alot of fluid on the ground i think it is transmishion fluid. I tryed starting my car again and it wouldnt move the rpms would just rev up like i was in park or neutral. its an automatic transmishion and i dont really know what to do.... my friend is a mechanic and he said that there might be a leak or a large hole in the line that goes to the pump and its possible that the pump has a shut off so if there is not enough fluid it wont let the trans opperate and if i can find the leak and put trans fluid back in after its fixed he thinks it will work but i thought i would try here before i try that so if you have any advice or know whats wrong it would be greatly apprechiated

thanks

Alex

Alex:
I am sorry, but as stated in my profile, I do not have direct experience with your and model SAAB. However, in general I would say it sounds like an external leak most likely in a hose between the transmission and radiator (transmission oil cooler). I suggest you look under the car and try to locate the source of the leak, paying particular attention to the side nearest the front of the car by the radiator. If not in the hose, then its likely to be a leak in the structural part of the transmission which is a very serious problem. requiring a new transmission...very very unlikely though.    Hope this helps,
