Saab: 1990 saab 900 wont start, vacuum leak, saab 900

Question
jerry,

for a while i've been getting a gas smell from the back.  i've been told it was the fuel pump seals. last week it started stalling ocassionally while braking, but would start up immediately.  i put gas in it and that problem went away.  i was thinking maybe the stalling was from bad gas or water in the gas etc.  two days ago i went to the store.  backed out of the parking space and it stalled and i have not been able to start it since.  i'm thinking it's the fuel pump but could it be something else or other things as well?

thanks for your time,

mike

Answer
Mike:  I see a little "clue" here. "Putting gas in it solved the problem", and "stalling while braking". Sounds like a fuel pickup hose problem. A vacuum leak in the in-the-tank fuel pump assembly, could be exposed to air during low gas or when accelerating/decelerating such as when braking.
Easiest thing to start the diagnosis:  Add some gas.  Then, check out the fuel pump circuitry by following a procedure I have outlined during one of my recent responses to someone else...about 2 months ago. If you cannot find it, or if you cannot conclude any diagnosis, please get back to me.
