Saab: 900 clutch slave, SAAB 900 clutch slave tool

Question
Hi Jerry. Would you be able to tell me the dimensions/etc for any spacer/special tool/s needed for me to replace my 900 clutch slave seal? I've read the process and it refers to such.

Answer
Richard:

I assume that by your term "clutch slave seal" you mean the o-rings that seal the slave cylinder. For your information, I have not had good luck with merely replacing those o-rings (the rubber material deteriorates in a year); I would therefore recommend getting a whole new slave cylinder if you can afford it.
As to the special tools; if the hydraulics are still working, then you can have a friend depress depress the clutch and insert a spacer beneath the pressure plate 'fingers' to keep it in a depressed position. As a spacer, I have successfully used a rod bent in almost a complete circle; the rod thickness is 0.162 inches and the outside diameter is 6.0 inches, with an open air gap of 2.0 inches in its normal position. It should be shaped so that its inner tension pushes outward to keep it engaged under the 'fingers'.

IF your hydraulics are not working, then you'll need to pry the fingers , one at a time, away from their rest position with a stout screwdriver or similar tool, allowing the inner tension (noted above) of the spacer to keep things in place as you rotate the pressure plate when engaging the 'fingers'.

  Hope this helps,
