Saab: Saab 900 1995, Saab check engine during warmup

Question
I have a 1995 Saab 900.  Today while driving, the caution light and battery light suddenly came on, the power steering went and I coasted safely to the curb. I could also smell something burning.  I turned the car off.  It turns back on but those two lights come back on, so I immediately turned car off again.   I don't know if it's related but last week in the frigid cold, the check engine light came on when I was driving on the highway for a few minutes.  Once my speed reduced on local streets, it went off.  I didn't think anything of it.
Could it be related to what's happening now?

Answer
Ann:
Sounds like a drive belt failure, disabling both the alternator and power steering pump.An easy fix by itself, but the cause should be determined. In cold weather, I have experienced alternator failures..it fails  by 'locking up' thus resulting in the belt slipping along with the burning smell. Both the alternator and power steering pump should be checked.
Its unlikely that the "check engine" incident is related, to which, by the way, I would not pay any attention, unless there are further signs of trouble, since on really cold days, during warmup momentary "imbalances" causing check engine conditions can occur.

  Hope this helps,
