Saab: Saab starting problem, No start

Question
Jerry:

I have a 1995 Saab 900, 2.3L manual. It does not start randomly. Read your answer concerning a similar problem for someone else--seemed to make sense and thought you might be able to help. The starting problem has been occurring for the past few months. I know I have a leak between the engine and transmission (I know--that's bad--it's oil and transmission fluid.) Randomly, the car does not start. At first I thought it might be the oil pressure switch--after I added a little oil it fired right up. (This cure doesn't work anymore.) Then I thought it might be the fuel relay--however, I deemed this not likely as the car still floods when I hold the gas down. It gets gas. (As a possibly relevant aside: there is a clicking when driving highway and "goosing" the accelerator.) The battery is strong, the starter seems to be fine, just does not "catch"--I am thinking spark is to blame, will be replacing the rotor and distributor cap. Otherwise, I saw to check compression--and then head gasket, etc. I am wondering if from these symptoms you might be able to divine the issue. Thank you.

Answer
Bjorn:

It sounds like either a lack of spark (which you'll be checking) or more likely, in my opinion, a weak fuel pump. To check it, I would connect 12 volts from the battery directly to the fuel pump (found under the trunk floor via a round hole)using long wires from the battery. You should immediately hear it running. Also, it could be a clogged fuel filter which shoulkd be checked as well. I do not know where it is to found on your model though.

          Hope this helps,
