Saab: Saab 9-3 1998, slow leaks, fuel connections


Question
I have recently acquired a saab 9-3 which had strong air frshner inside when i have removed these there is a strong smell of petrol coming into the car when i stop or when it is idling it is sometime their when u accelerate quickly. I have taken it to 2 garages and they cannot find the problem,   Any ideas ?

 I am afraid that this problem simply requires a more careful examination than the mechanics were willing to do..I would check the fuel system from the tank onward. I am not sure where the fuel connections are on your model (see my profile), but on the 900 series they are under the trunk floor..below a  round metal cover.Anyway, you you should check those connections (by sniffing) for any slow leaks once you find them at the tank, then trace the fuel lines forward to the fuel filter, thence to the engine compartment, all the while with the engine running. ("Keep sniffing!")(only then will the fuel lines remain constantly pressurized and thus revealing the signs of the leak). It simply requires patience and logic to find the leak. In any case, it is MOST LIKELY to be found at some point of fuel line connection to some other device such as fuel tank, filter, regulator, or injector manifold.
 If you cannot do the above personally, then you simply must find a competent and responsible mechanic who can. Its not difficult...only tedious.
