Saab: 1996 Saab 9000 Transmission Fluid/filter, saab 9000, jackstands

Question
I recently purchased a 1996 Saab 9000.  Sometimes when I put it in reverse, it's like it doesn't catch right away and when it does it jerks into reverse.  I would like to change the transmission fluid and filter but have no idea how to do it.  Do you think that this may help or what would you suggest?

Answer
Mike:
Your idea to change the fluid, given the symptoms, is an excellent one.!  I have done that many times with excellent success. Although I am not personally familiar with the '96 900 auto trans, I suspect it is quite similar to most modern fwd vehicles that I have worked on. What you must do is first, with the engine warm, jack up the front of the car and place it on sturdy steady jackstands. Then get a large container (at least 18 inches wide) to catch the old fluid. Now loosen the many bolts starting at the rear, removing all those on the rear and sides (but not in the front yet); by loosening those in the front gradually, the rear of the pan accepts the outgoing fluid until its all out. Then remove the remaining bolts, and now you'll need to change the filter. Unscrew the screws holding it(with either torx or Phillips heads) lower and replace the filter. Reinstall the pan and gasket and then refill with the appropriate fluid.

Its a bit messy, but very easy.  Good Luck!
