Saab: ignition switch wiring, aligator clips, saab dealer

Question
Richard,

Thank you for your assistance on installing the key cylinder on my 1984 Saab 900 Turbo. I did as you advised and took a picture of the parts I am working on prior to removing the items. However, when I went back to install the new parts the picture is not clear enough to tell the wiring colors on the electrical ignition switch.

Do you have any pictures or a wiring digram on how the 6 wires plug into the ignition switch?

I have 3 wires in a harness from the automatic transmission shift indicator and 6 wires from the main wiring harness.

Please advise.

ps: if you know of any other websites that I can go to it would also help. Or if you have the website for Saab direct. I have checked with the local Saab dealer, which they are not willing to assist.

Thank You Loren

Answer
Loren,
Each time I have had to rewire my ignition, I have not had access to the diagrams. It's kind of a pain, but I think you can figure it out. See tips below.
Start by closely looking at how the wires lie naturally - they will want to return to their original positions. Next, Figure out what each wire and mating connector does when the key is in various positions. The circular pattern of male tabs that you connect the wires too is patterened in a way that electrically reflects the position of the key in a fairly logical mannor. As I recall, constant 12VDC is in the center. Make yourself up a couple of test cables with wire and aligator clips or anything else that will allow you too quickly figure out the order of the wires. Start plugging away.
The wires coming from the tranny are proby for your light switch.
If I remember, I will make a copy tonite.

Loren,
I scanned and printed to pdf the wiring pages from my Bentley Book - highly recomend you get this book (http://www.bentleypublishers.com/saab/index.htm) - the pages are in reverse order, sorry. I haven't figured out how to attach a doc to all experts. So, ask a follow-up question to this with your email address and I will send you the scanned pages directly.
Also, you might take a look at the links noted below, they are a good source of info. Screw the dealer, they will always rip you off. The only reputable place that I have ever found is Mile High Saab (http://www.milehibodyshop.com/)in Denver, CO. They are extremely knowledgable and great for parts.
