Saab: Alternator, auto zone, voltage regulator

Question
I  have a '87 900S 16V.  I am told by Auto Zone that my alternator is dead and not charging my battery.  Can I change the VR and brushes? Would that work, cause I cant afford a new alt right now.

Answer
The brushes are located in your voltage regulator which is mounted to your alt. Check that out. Get the parts used from a local junkyard or ebay. You could proby (starting to get a little redneck here) get a hold of some conductive graphite epoxy and repair it yourself.
