Saab: Saab ACS, automatic clutch, clutch system

Question
Hi, I know that your expertise says for 1980's, but I figure that since you have a background in mechanical engineering you may know the answer to my question... I have a 1995 Saab 900SE, it is automatic but on the dash there is a Check ACS light and in my owners manual it is not listed, so I looked it up and found that it is an Automatic Clutch System light, but my car has no clutch.  What has me concerned is that the Check ACS light looks like its on, but the bulb is dim so you really can't see it that well and I know that it is out b/c it does not turn on like all the other lights do when I start the car.  Can you explain to me why the Check ACS light might be on when my car does not even have a clutch?
Thank you,
Natalie

Answer
Natalie,
I have never owned nor worked on an automatic transmission, but will give it a shot. From what I understand, an automatic transmission has several clutches for engaging and disengaging various gears. Considering that there are many more components in transmission that just these clutches, I don't understand why there would be a warning light dedicated to just that component. Above all, make sure that all of your fluids are at the right level(s). Thus, it proby is akin to a check engine light for your transmission. It is my understanding that the transmission in this vehicle is made by GM. You should be able to go to any auto shop and have them hook an OBDI meter to it and read the codes. GM is kind of screwy in that arena so you may have to go to a Saab shop.
