Saab: timing chain, timing chain replacement, car timing

Question
My SAAB stopped running while I was driving it. When I tried to start it again it turns over but will not start. I think it might be the timing chain. So how do I go about changeing the timing on my SAAB. I have never attempted this before. It is a 1987 900 SAAB

Answer
Not an easy task. The chain is endless, IE there is no master link. The saab book says the engine has to come out to change the chain, although it is possible to change the chain with the engine in the car. Lots of work. It would take too long for me to explain here, but go to:

http://216.78.173.190/entry/tech_doc_systems.htm
Click on "engine" and once there click on "in car timing chain replacement"

one final word: If your chain broke while driving, there will be other engine damage, this is because on the saab 2.0 liter engine the valve timing is critical, and if it's off the pistons will hit valves. Bad bad bad. Check your compression. If it's ok on all cylinders your chain did not break. ALso see if your distributor rotor turns during engine crank, if it turns, once again your chain is not broken.
