Toyota: 1991 toyota pickup 4x4 4 cyl, injector cleaner, ngk plugs

Question
I was coming home from work the other day, my engine light came on. i got home checked all my fluids, and wires and hoses and fuses, no findings. i let the truck sit for about three hours went back out and tried to start, it had a hard time to start, it finally started and it would shake real badly, and acted like it would not burn all the gas i was giving it i tacked it up to two grand and it ran fine, i let it settle back down and then try to tack it again and same thing struggled badly. i took off my rotor cap and button and replaced with new, i just replacedmy wires and plugs ten thousand miles ago, with borq warner wires and ngk plugs.. i tried to start it this time and it had a hard time agaian to get going, but now it ran at a smoothe idle, but still has a hard time to start with, i just rplaced the fuel filter, and oil and filter 400 miles ago. i am stumped on this it has 211,000 miles on it, 12,000 miles ago i had the heads and valves done on it. and now i would love tto know what it could be that causes my truck to have this problem with first getting started and burning the gas or something... please help me if you can

Answer
Thank you Scott!  You'll have been the first user that put up EXACTLY what I like to hear so I don't have to reply "A good tune-up is the first place to start".

Anyways, let's start from hard-starting.  Do you hear any clicking sounds when you try to crank the engine?  I'd check the starter motor to see if it's good.  The thing that I really hate about answering questions is that without having the thing in my hands, I can only guess;)

Well, to continue, as far as the idle issue..  You now have a good idle but it struggles to stay on when you throttle up to 2K on the tachometer.  Fuel filter is good.  How about a bottle of an injector cleaner.  "Seafoam Engine treatment" or Lucas brand fuel injector cleaner.  Next, you can try cleaning the throttle body.  I like to use Valvoline synthetic throttle body/carb choke cleaner and a toothbrush to get it at the gunk.

Have you pulled the plugs to look at the color of the tips?  One thing I like to do to start tackling an issue is looking at the plugs.  They are the dipstick to the cylinders and their combustion but alot of people overlook them:(  Reply back and I'll send you a spark plug chart that lists what color means what issue your engine MAY HAVE.

you didn't mention air filter, so.. I have to ask.. is it good?  (I'm sure it's fine too but I gotta ask)

Write back as soon as you can, i want to see if we can get to the bottom of this one:)

ooooohhhh sorry sorry.. I forgot.. You said you have a CEL (check engine light) on?  Our lazy way is to check what's causing that light to come on and backtrack the problem fixing that issue first:)  Write me back and I'll send you the 1 dollar way to check the reason for the light:)
