Toyota: Engine rattle on overrun, toyota corolla, belt tension

Question
Hello again David

Greatly appreciate your response.

Pinging: I'm going to buy an injector cleaner, replace plugs and fuel filter this weekend.

Rattle - I'll check the motor mounts, but I have a strong suspiscion it's within the engine itself: There isn't any movement of the motor or any slack in the drive train.  Plus I have opened the bonnet (I mean "hood"!) and revved the motor and listened to it.  It definitely makes a harsh rattle as the revs fall throught the 2000 rpm band.  I have a hunch that it's the valve gear, but am a bit trepidatious about wading in on a 16V engine.  Wondered if it could also be one or more of the small end bearings (dread).  Might try the 'stethoscope method' with a big screw driver to see if I can locate the source.

If anything else occurs to you, your suggestions would be greatly valued.  When I get to the bottom of it I will pass on the knowledge.

Cheerio for now.

Martin

Hello David

I'd appreciate your advice on this....

My Toyota Corolla (A 1996, 1,4l, 16v fuel injected) rattles on the overrun - like when the revs fall through +/- 2000rpm when changing gear.  If I change gear at higher revs, or keep the revs up between the gears, the engine doesn't rattle.  The rattle is quite harsh and quite pronounced.  A mechanic replaced the cam belt tension roller, but that didn't fix it.  No rattling is detectable during acceleration or at idle.  It always occurs as the revs fall through the 2000rpm range.

It also pings at lower revs when engine under load.  Posher petrol cures this.

Fuel consumption ok, engine temperature normal, minimal oil consumption, no leaks.  Service history is good.  Drives nicely.  Previous owner hardly drove it for a period of several months and car lived outside.  Not sure if this was good for it.

What can it be?  It's driving me nuts !

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mart.

Pinging at lower revs and a rattle in the 2000rpm range..  Hmmm..  Have you tried using a fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank and just replacing your fuel filter?  I want to make sure it's not your engine starving for fuel.  Hmmm...  Do you keep up with basic maintence?  Oil and oil filter?  Check your spark plugs too.  We just need to make sure the engine is spot on perfect first.

Aside from that, you say that this awful noise only occurs in the 2000 rpm range...  Motor mounts?  Give a quick look through at all three and see if any need replacing.  Get back to me whenever you can and I hope this helps!

Valvetrain is logically the next step in the search my friend.  Does the power surge at all though?  Is there any smoke during start-up?  Engine braking fine?

Have you gotten any "CELs"?  (Check Engine Light)

I'm trying to remember the engine code for the car but only 1.6 engines and the 1.3 4E-FTE come to mind.  I can't think of any 1.4L.  Find me an engine code and I'll see if I can get a manual to help us.
