Toyota: auto gear box, cynos, apears

Question
my dauther has a 1991 cynos.The auto trans will not change into top gear,ok into 1st and second but won't move into top . also has two switches on dash ..one being auto other manual when you push then a light apears on the dash pannel ...what do thers do ?

I'm not exactly sure what the problem seems to be but it sounds like you are saying it won't go into the "overdrive" gear or the final gear, right?  Well, this is due in relation to those buttons you speak of.  On the shifter there should be a button on the side.  When it is up, a light turns on with something like "O/D Off" and when it's pushed down, it goes away.  This button tells the transmission if it is able or unable to go into that final gear.  If you have it pushed down (light off) the you say that the transmission is allowed to go into the final gear.  If you have it up (light on), then the transmission will not go into the final gear.  

Driving with the light on causes the transmission to work harder and your engine as well.
