Toyota: 98 Toyota Corolla Squeaking noise, disc rotors, toyota corolla

Question
I have a 98 toyota corolla automatic 4 dr sedan dx.  When I start my car I hear this loud high pitched screeching.  It sounds like its rotating with the car, kind of an eeeek, eeeeek, eeeeek.  If I accelerate and brake, kinda get the car going, it stops.  It also makes the sound when I turn my wheels hard or reverse sometimes.  It gets louder and more high pitched when I accelerate and slows down when I slow down.  Also(and I dont know if this pertains to the question), my brakes squeak when I press on them.  I just had new brake pads put on the back and I cant tell which end the noise is coming from.  It's really annoying and I would appreciate any help. Thanks so much.

Answer
Kelsey, I'd have to say that it's your brakes causing the problem.  You say that they screech when you turn, screech louder when you accelerate and then brake, and you have the "eek, eek" sound.

That'll either be worn out pads (since you already have done your rear pads, then you should look at your front pads.  As the pad wears, this little sliver of metal gets closer and closer to the disc.  Once it gets to a minimum amount of pad material, the metal sliver touches and scrapes the disc.  It gives this awful sound and it only gets more and more awful as more and more of the brake wear indicator scrapes against the disc.  Finally, if you ignore ALL of that noise, your pad will reach the end of its material.  Once that happens, you'll be welcomed by the AWFUL sound of metal to metal that will sound like you are dragging something metal from under you car and your brake pedal will pulse as you push on it.  THIS could cause severe damage to your discs if you chose to ignore this awful sound.

If the pads check out fine, then it could be that the disc (rotors) are worn.  If that should be the case, you can have a brake shop use a lathe to resurface them (assuming that the disc are not worn to the bare minimum.

Hope this helps and sorry if my reply was long.
