Toyota: toyota avensis diesel 1998, avensis diesel, toyota avensis

Question
Dear David,

I am writing you from Sweden.
I am thinking of bying Toyota Avensis Diesel 2.0TD  1998, 110 000km. What do you think about this car ?
I have heard that those diesels are not good. There have problems with overheating and cracks in the head.

What is your opinon?

Thank you
Ivan

Answer
Well, from my very basic look at the history of the Avensis, it seems like the old-school (eg. 1980's) model year Avensis had their share of problems but some like the 1998 model year seems to have very little to no problems.  That doesn't mean that you won't have problems because aside from any typical Toyota problems you've heard about the car, the owner can also have neglected the car and may end up costing you money because you have to fix it.

So, my best advice to you is to ask the seller of any problems they may have had with the, as well, test drive the car and have a mechanic give it a good look over.  Is the timing belt or chain good?  Any leaks?

Also, if you were to buy it, ask the seller when was the last time the tune-up was done.  A proper tune-up will give you back lost horsepower and gas mileage.

Should you buy it, I hope it turns out a great, problem-free car.  Hope this helps, Ivan.
