Toyota: 98 tacoma manual transmission, clutch replacement, toyota tech

Question
I purchased a new 1998 toyota tacoma standard cab 2WD 5 speed manual that now has 140,000 miles.  So far, I've changed the transmission fluid three times already for standard maintenance.  Lately, I've noticed it sporadically hesitate after accelerating fom a complete stop and even at high speeds. In other words, the engine does not completely die, but rather sounds like i'm in neutral while accelrating the gas pedal in first gear.  Could this be a possible transmission problem? I don't have any leaks on my driveway. I've been advised to check the fluid level on the transmission dipstick, however I could not find one. Do manual transmissions have dipsticks?  What could I do to check this out?   thanks

Answer
Hi Mark,

That sounds like the clutch slipping.  Your forward motion hesitates, but the rpms rev way up?  And it happens at any speed?  Sounds like its clutch replacement time.  You did great if you got 140K miles on the original clutch!  (Or whoever had it before you did great.)  I don't think its a fluid problem, of all the 5-speeds I've ever owned, those symptoms were always the clutch.

Get more than one estimate for getting it replaced.  Some places are higher than others, and that is a common maintenance item that doesn't require a Certified Toyota Tech to install.

Good luck!
