Volkswagen: Fuel gas sending unit installation, bayonet type, rubber washers

What method or tool do you use to install a 72 superbeetle bayonet type fuel sending unit. I am having a hard time compressing the o-ring and turning the sending unit at the same time.

Hi Chris,

You should be able to do this operation by hand.  Double-check to make sure that you do not have two rubber washers on the unit, there should only be one.  If it is too hard to turn, try the steps below:


1) Twist in sender without rubber gasket first so you can see how it needs to go in.

2) Once you determined the correct placement, put the gasket on, press down on the sender and slightly turn it the way you did in step 1.

3) Once it catches, you can put a flat head screw driver on one of the cogs of the sender and gently tap it into place.
