Volkswagen: generater problem, vw beetle, hi matthew

i just put a new generater on my 1968 vw beetle and when the 2 wires on it are plugged in it wont turn over with the key... When i unplug the 2 wires from the generater it will turn over with the key. what or how do i fix this??

Hi Matthew,

First, check your wiring to the generator.


1) The RED wire should go to D+ terminal on the Generator, and it runs to the voltage regulator. (little square box).

2) The GREEN wire should go DF terminal on the Generator, and it leads to the voltage regulator as well.
