Volkswagen: 71 Bug autostick, clutch servo, vacuum hoses

Question
I have a 71bug auto stick that pops/bangs very loud (and jerks) when I put it in gear. The motormount at the rear is tight.  ATF is full.  I have a Bentley VW svc manual and adjusted the adjusting control valve (1/4 to 1/2 turn clockwise) until it bottomed out and each adjustment was the same--no difference in the jecrking/banging when I engaged a gear.  however, once in motion it drives fine; no problem shifting or downshifting.  Just when I start/engage the gear.  Please help.

Answer
Hi Joe,

I recently had someone contact me with a similar problem, and here is what we found out -- two of the vacuum hoses from the control valve were leaking.

Try this:

Turn the car on to build up vaccum.
Turn off the car.
Put the key on 'on' (engine not running)
Look under the car at the clutch servo on the transmission.
With key on 'on' and engine off, have someone put shifter into 1.
See if servo is fully pulling the clutch lever back.

---- If not, it sounds like you have a vaccuum leak.  Check hoses.

Also, make sure that the thin little vacuum hose is connected.  It leads from the rear of the control valve to a port on the carb.

Finally, make sure that the idle on the engine is correct.

Let me know how you make out.
