Volkswagen: 1972 Standard Beetle wont turn off, engine ignition, headlight switch

Question
My 1972 Standard Beetle will not turn off until I turn off the headlights.  I am wondering if the headlight switch needs to be replaced or is there a short I need to track down.

Answer
Hi Daniel,

It sounds like one of two things:

1) The switch is defective and needs to be replaced

or

2) There is an open circuit which is keeping the engine (ignition coil) on.  Quite often this happens on the early 70's beetles w/the pull out light switch.  Check to see that none of the terminals are shorting to the metal part of the dashboard. (grounded)

Let me know how you make out.

Thanks,

Ron
