Volkswagen: vw engines, reconditioned pumps, crank shaft

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1972 vw auto-stick with a locked engine. how can i modify a straight shift engine to replace the locked engine? i have removed the clutch assembly from the straight shift engine and installed a drive plate and torque converter.

ANSWER: Antone,
The engine is not unique to the auto-stick.  Swap with any carbureted 1600 long block (the heads for fuel injected are different) and move all the accessories to the new engine.

*** Follow up ***

One engine difference I realized; the oil pump is unique to the auto-stick.  It is 2 stage: one for the engine oil and the other for the transmission.

QUESTION: your follow-up pertains to my question. i removed the transmission/oil pump (plate ?) from under the crank shaft pully with the two transmission hoses. how do i modify the straight shift engin. the straight shift engine only has an oil pump. THANKS ! DON'T MEAN TO BE A PEST!

Answer
Antone,
The entire original 2 stage oil pump unit should be removed from the old engine and used on the new engine.  This includes the Transmission stage (outer most), the intermediate plate/seals, and the Primary stage (inserted in the engine).  Otherwise purchase a complete new unit.  Also the pump mounting studs on the new engine may be too short, so the old ones should be removed and reused.  To remove the studs, you can use the trick of 2 nuts screwed together on a stud, then unscrew by wrenching just the inner nut, which jams it into the outer nut, allowing you to get the torque needed to remove the stud.

You might want to replace the seals with new:

You can get reconditioned pumps, but they are pricey:
