Volkswagen: 95 VW GOLF Diesel Glow Plug Blew, golf diesel, glow plugs

Question
1st chg'd alltinator, then car wouldn't run.  Towed to garage and they said the glow plugs needed to be replaced.  They did then car still ran very poorly so they suggested put in diesel contitioner and take for a drive. 20 min later one of the glow plugs blew and now part is in the head they said not their fault and very expensive to remove head and get the broken part out.  Do you think it is their fault?  What could have caused the plug to blow?

Answer
Judy,
Running the engine too lean can cause this.  The conditioner may have caused this (not enough octane).  The head should be able to be fixed with a threaded insert.  I would:  Get an estimate from them, threaten to sue, but then compromise on splitting the cost.  Then both you and the shop won't feel like you are totally getting the shaft.
