Volkswagen: 1998 jetta gl 5spd, volkswagen repair, vw passat

Question
I have a 98 getta (my sons) that has an issue, I will try to explain the symptoms. First the car was giving him problems in wet conditions it would sputter etc... We replaced the cap rotor and wirers he drove it for about a month then one day it completely quit on him. He took the car to a service location (national) they determined that the coil was bad; they replaced it with an aftermarket part. But after replacing the coil it would still not run right missing and would not run over idle. They were stumped so we took it home.(my house) I am trying to fix but not sure were to go with it. The car turns over and will fire sporadically but will not run it barley idles, I have put in fresh premium gas, Replaced plugs I believe it to be either Fire or fuel. I tested fuel pressure by removing feed from fuel rail and turning over car and I do have good pressure not tested with gage but enough pressure to push finger off only when turning over. Tested spark by pulling plug and grounding and turning over, There is some spark but not very aggressive, But I am a mustang guy and do not know anything about VW. Any suggestions?

Answer
Tim,
This issue could be caused by numerous problems.  Also, the car's computer should certainly be recording some serious error codes if it is running this badly.  I suggest getting an OBD scan or your own scanner; this should help narrow the possibilities down.  See this post to DIY:

Tim,
On second thought, this issue does seem to be related to the coil packs.  Here is some info:
