Volkswagen: 69 VW bus turns over but wont stay started, vw bus, berryman

Question

my engine
My 69 VW bus started and ran fine, then I parked it in my garage for a week and painted it, now it starts only when I put gas in the carb and it stays running for 1-2 seconds, then just dies. This bus has alot of new parts on rebuilt engine. what could the problem be?

Answer
Matt,
It seems to be a fuel issue.  It may be:
- Bad fuel pump.
- Clogged fuel filter/pump (rust?)
- Clogged lines in/from fuel tank.
- Clogged jets/ports in the carb.
- Stuck float in the carb.

From the picture you can obviously see if there is gas in the filter.  If so, the fuel pump is likely ok, but you can check it by removing one hose from the filter and have someone crank while holding the hose in a can.  If that works, then with the engine off, take the air filter off and while pumping the throttle on the side of the carb, use a mirror to observe if gas is shooting into the carb. This should verify the float and accelerator pump, but the jets could still be clogged.  So if all else fails, disassemble the the carb and give it a thorough cleaning with Berryman's.
