Volkswagen: 1979 fuel pump?, correct tools, berkeley ca

Question

Ive owned my WESTY for about a year and a half, its a 1974 with 79 motor. As soon as I bought it I took it to a mech called the bus lab in Berkeley CA, and spent $3000 on her to tune her up. A few months after buying it it started cutting out cleanly not sputtering, but since then drives well half the time. I took her on a short trip up the CA coast a few weeks ago and upon my return she  cut out all the way back. When I got back she drove fine after resting a few days and now wont start at all. I think it might be the fuel pump, but im not a mechanic. The reason im asking you before i get her fixed is because I want to start doing more of my own work on her, and Id like to have some more info before proceeding to the next step. Any information you could provide would be greatly received.

Answer
Brodie,
If you really suspect the pump, you can do a fuel pressure test, but you'll need a gauge.  The reading should be around 35 PSI.  The test port is on the left (drivers side US) on the fuel rail between cylinder 3 and 4.
IMHO, you can DIY most any repair on your Westy with just some knowledge, the correct tools and the Bentley "Official" service manual.  Also there are some great web sites to help guide you:
