Volkswagen: 1975 VW Fuel-injection bug, engine rebuilders, volkswagen air

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good and cheap place to rebuild an engine for a 1975 VW bug? It was ran low on engine oil, and I think the bearings are dead, or the engine is gone according to one mechanic. I was quoted 1800 to rebuild it.

Is it hard to rebuild it myself? Do i need a lot of tools and experience?

 If you are not experienced, yes rebuilding an engine can be a daunting task, not to mention the tools you'll need.  If you still want to consider it, I would recommend this book:
