Volkswagen: 1979 Beetle turn signal/washer switch removal, diameter pvc pipe, shaft bearing

Question
I removed steering wheel, 4 screws, wiring blocks from below. It does not come out like book states. What steps are missing?

Answer
Tom, It's been awhile, but as I recall there is a "C" clip to remove from around the spline shaft bearing, which is not obvious, so you have to look closely.  In addition, there is a round plastic "spacer bushing" for lack of the official term (imagine a 1 inch long piece of 1/2" diameter PVC pipe), which is simply pressed on, and needs to pried off the shaft with a flat screw driver, but it can be hard to get moving, so you have to be determined.  Next, make sure you remove the M8 hex screw under the left side housing of the column.  Then you must insert and turn the key to be able to remove the key tumbler and the black plastic housing surrounding it.  I think this piece of black plastic may be whats holding you up.   Hope this helps; let me know how it goes.  - Rick O.
