Volkswagen: 78 VW conv. super beetle, oil consumption, superbeetle

Question
Rick, my wife has a 78 superbeetle that she has driven for 24 years. We have had routine maintenance performed on it reguraly. Now it is beginning to give us problems. It is leaking/using about a qt of oil a day. and after running for some time it won't restart until setting for 20 25 min.

Answer
Jimmy,  First of all, congratulations on your wife's 24th year anniversary of aircooled driving!  Awesome!
Now you didn't say how many miles were on the engine, and if it's ever been rebuilt.  Assuming not, and assuming she has been driving it all those wonderful years, and given this amount of oil consumption, the answer my be just plain simple: it's time for a fresh engine.  VW's really are only supposed to be good for about 100,000 miles they say, it's the nature of the aircooled world.  If all of the above were true, I would do a complete swap with a "new" professional rebuilt engine, using yours to cover the core charge.
If the above assumptions are not true, then get back to me with the actual situation and we'll take from there.

Jimmy,
I can tell you the correct engine case is the AJ.  These have a harder alloy than previous carbureted models.  The correct heads are 043 101 375H, drivers side with the CHT sensor bore(unique to fuel injection), and 043 101 375R for the passenger side (US reference). These heads also have the proper size valves for fuel injection.
GEX.COM sells anything from long blocks to completed turnkey engines.  If you should choose to rebuild, you can get check out the heads at CIP1.com.    I do not endorse either company, only a reference to start your own research.  Check out mamotorworks.com for many other items, I like their selection, and also I deal with Jbugs.com, I know them personally (used to live in So. Cal.)
You have a wonderful classic, with an incredible cool factor even after all these years, and that will only increase in value.  New Beetles will never compare(they are huge lemons).  There are tons of relatively cheap parts (compared with maintaining "new" cars). Fix'r up and keep her running!
